Boise
,
Idaho
passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013.
Jan was born in
Le Mars
,
Iowa
to Willard and Lillian. Her father was a U.S. Merchant Marine Veteran
of World War II, and she spent her
childhood in
Iowa
and
Maryland
.
Following the war they were stationed in
Long Beach
,
California
where Jan attended High School. She
graduated from
Woodrow
Wilson
High
School
in 1953.
After graduation, Jan began working in the Aerospace and
Transportation Industry at North American.
She was an Executive Secretary for the Vice President of the Engineering
Team that designed the Space Shuttle Heat Shield and the first Submarine to reach
the North Pole. She worked for North
American in the 1950s and 60s where she met her husband, Joe B. Evans. They married on May 1, 1965 and had two
children Richard and Linda. She enjoyed
the corporate world and the people she met in
California
,
Houston
,
Texas
and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1972, her husband attended his
Boise
High School
reunion and decided to
leave the Aerospace Industry and buy a restaurant in
Boise
– “The Red Apple”. Although Jan was nervous and resistant at
first, she grew to love
Boise
and self-employment. They also
owned/co-owned several other businesses including: Levi’s Alley, Mountain
Billiards, and Whiskey River Saloon.
Jan enjoyed raising her children in
Boise
and cherished the friendship she
developed. She loved staying active
playing tennis, aerobics, waterskiing, skiing and occasional golf. Jan was also active in her son’s motocross
racing, and served as the Treasurer on the Owyhee Motorcycle Club Board for
several years.
After her husband’s passing, Jan began working at the
Boise
Airport
part-time as a screener. She was quickly
promoted to the Security/General Manager.
After September 11, 2001 Jan became the Security Manager for Transportation
Security Administration (TSA). Although
it was a stressful time with long hours, Jan was driven and happy to go to work
each day. She often commented how it
reminded her of her younger years, and she was devoted to keeping the public
safe. She retired after 13 years on
September 11, 2009, and received numerous awards including the 2006
Environmental Stewardship Award.
Jan spent her retirement doing the things she loved: laughing and watching Boise State Football
with close friends, gardening, cooking and playing Bridge. She played in several Bridge groups and truly
enjoyed the friendships she developed.
Jan was a loving mother and friend who will be dearly missed. She was a fabulous cook, who had a wonderful
sense of humor, and was always looking out for others.
She and her family would like to extend a warm thank you to
her wonderful Doctors: Dr. James Souza,
Dr. David Nielsen, Dr. Dan Zuckerman, Dr. Robert Studebaker, Mountain States
