Melvin “Mel” Adamson passed away suddenly September 1, 2023 in a local hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Melvin L. Adamson, born December 15, 1940, in Idaho Falls, ID to Earl L. Adamson and Katherine E. Stoneman. Mel lived in Idaho Falls until WW II broke out. Earl moved the family to California so he could work for McDonald Douglas Aircraft. In 1942 a sister, Sharon Lucille, was born. The family lived in California for a time before moving to the Salt Lake area where his dad worked at Hill AFB. They then moved back to Idaho Falls where Mel and Sharon had many good memories with cousins, aunts and uncles. The family moved to Boise where Mel attended Washington Grade School, North Jr. High, East Jr. High, and graduated from Boise High School in 1959. He joined the Idaho Air National Guard in December 1957. Being under the age of 18, his mother signed her approval. He continued to serve in the Idaho Air National Guard aircraft maintenance for the next 36 years, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel and position of Maintenance Control Officer. He was extremely proud of this part of his life. He loved the Guard and what it stands for. All the time he was working full time in the guard he was attending night school at Boise College, Boise State College and Boise State University, finally graduating in 1976.
In the summer of 1960, he met the person he would spend the next 62 years of his life with, Patricia Lee, they were married January 7, 1961. They stayed in Boise where they raised their three children, Betty Foote, Linda McGuffin (Dale) and Chris (Kelly) Adamson. He has 7 grandchildren, Anthony (Matti) and Damian D’Amato, Sean and Chance McGuffin, and Krystle Drake (Jeff), Kendra Adamson and Connor Adamson. He has also been blessed with 4 great grandchildren, D’Angelo D’Amato, Lillyin, Mirranda and Olivia Drake. He so loved his family, Dairy Queen vanilla cones, and his dogs, especially Buddy. Mel and Pat lived in the only home they ever bought 60 years ago.
Mel and Pat were fortunate to have been able to travel a bit, Canada, Alaska, Norway, Hawai’i and many parts of the US. But home and the cabin is where he wanted to be. He took great pride in his yard and garden, spending many hours picking up twigs and leaves with his “pinchers”! Not a twig or stray leaf was to be found in his grass!
He is survived by his wife Pat, children and familie, his sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Bob Woodhead, niece Rhonda (Ed) Genther and daughters, and nephew Rich Ricketts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law (Florence Powell) and father-in-law (Frank Powell), and 2 sons-in-law Joe Branson and Rudy Foote.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise.
