October
16, 1948 – May 21, 2014
Michael
(Mike) Eugene Hagler was born October 16, 1948 in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Eugene
(Gene) and Edith Hagler. Gene worked as
a State Policeman, patrolling the area between Twin Falls and Sun Valley. Three years later, the family welcomed a baby
sister, Debbie Hagler, into the world and moved to a farm in Eagle Idaho, where
Mike attended grade school. Following
grade school, the Family moved to Meridian.
Mike,
tall for his age, wanted to be a basketball player. Like everything he went after, he did it with
hard work and determination. He ran for
miles with weights on his ankles, practiced jumping, and did hand exercises to
strengthen his grip. He became the star
player for the Meridian High School Warriors.
His senior year of high school, he was the highest point scorer in the
state and was the first All American high school student from the state of
Idaho.
During
those high school years, Mike’s accomplice to several misadventures was Greg Davis. The two hunted and fished together, but
mostly got themselves into trouble, riding the baggage carousel at the airport
until “asked” to leave and driving Mike’s car into the Anderson Ranch Reservoir
to name a few. It is a miracle the two
survived high school.
Mike’s
success on the basketball court paid off with a full ride scholarship to the
University of Idaho where he studied Civil Engineering. At the U of I, Mike added his fraternity
brothers to the list of accomplices in misadventures, including betting on
pinball to pay for beer. He had more
than his fair share of fun in Moscow.
After marrying Kathryn Scott, Mike graduated with honors and accepted a
position with the Chevron Corporation.
During
Mike’s successful career at Chevron, he had two wonderful sons, Michael and
Jeffrey. During this time, Mike worked
at several positions within Chevron, including the refinery manager position in
Honolulu, Hawaii, where Mike was Chevron’s youngest refinery manager ever. Soon thereafter, the Hagler family settled in
the San Francisco area.
Following
the separation of Mike and Kathy, Mike met and married soul-mate, Kathy Lusk. They lived in San Ramon and then Los Angeles,
where Mike finished his career where he started it, as the refinery manager for
the El Segundo refinery. Mike retired
early and the two moved to Eagle, Idaho.
Mike
loved retirement! His new work included
clock repair, studying Spanish, riding motorcycles, and most favorite, building
guitars and ukuleles. Throughout life,
he was an accomplished engineer and craftsman in every sense of the word.
Mike
and Kathy spent most of their 25 years of marriage in Eagle and McCall. The Hagler boys attended Boise High and
Bishop Kelly. Following graduation, they
both joined the U.S. Navy. Mike and
Kathy traveled and played. Extended
motorcycle rides with friends added to the growing list of misadventures,
including a motorcycle rides to Sturgis, South Dakota, many trips along the
Oregon Coast, even a motorcycle trip through the European Alps.
The
family enjoyed the friendship and companionship of friends and family and
remained true to their vision of a fun and active life together. The family also included two very loving and
energetic Labradors, Moose and Melodie.
While Kathy continued to work as a consultant, Mike and the dogs guarded
the home-front. The family mascot was a
Moose.
In
2001, Jeffrey was killed in a car accident while serving the Navy in Norfolk,
Virginia. Michael had a successful
enlistment on a fast attack submarine, completed his Engineering Degrees and
became a nuclear engineer in Bremerton, Washington, where he lives currently
with his wife Kim.
Mike
was preceded in death by his father, mother, and son, Jeff. He is survived by his wife Kathy, their son,
Michael, his sister, Debbie Allen, and many other local family members and
friends.
