Samuel Edwin Roeber, 95, of Atlanta, ID, died Thursday, May 8,
2014 in a local hospital.
Sam was born on July 7, 1918 in Paonia, Colorado, the son of Mary
and Frank Leonard Roeber. He was brought
north to Meridian Idaho in 1926. On
December 7, 1940 Sam married the late Dorothy Fern Bentzinger in Chehalis
Washington. Sam proudly served his
country during World War II from 1942 to 1945.
After his service he turned his attention toward raising a family. Sam and Dorothy raised their three boys in
the Meridian area while making frequent trips to the Idaho Mountains most
weekends. In 1980 Sam retired from his position as bridge repair foreman with
the Idaho Transportation Department. Traveling throughout the state allowed him
to discover many unique treasures and fishing holes that Idaho has to offer. Sam and Dorothy's passion for the outdoors led
them to their retirement home in Atlanta, Idaho. Although retired, neither one rested,
choosing instead to serve their new community in Atlanta. Sam was actively involved in every project,
committee, or commission that needed help.
Sam had a true passion for helping others, often greeting strangers at
the back door with a cup of coffee, eager to lend a helping hand.
Sam never sat idle no matter what time of year. He wanted to be outside enjoying God’s
gifts. He enjoyed mushrooming in the spring time, hunting and prospecting in
the fall, backpacking and picking huckleberries in the summer, snowmobile pot
lucks with friends in the winter, and never saw a day where he couldn’t
go fishing. His passion for the outdoors
was only made better when he could share them with the people he loved. His guidance, stories, wisdom, strength, and
generosity will be forever missed but never forgotten.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy
Roeber, Brothers Philip and Keith Roeber, son Leonard Roeber, and daughter
in-law Pearl Roeber.
Sam is survived by his oldest son Roger Roeber and fiancé Jean Fredette Of
Harrington, Maine, and his children Michael and Lisa of Harrington, Peter and
his wife
Catherine of Oxford Pennsylvania, Melanie of
West Port, MA,
Chrissy
Farias and Tammy Lund
of Tennessee; son Randall and wife Debra Roeber of
Mountain Home; daughter in-law Diane Roeber, her son, Ben and wife Shaunna Roeber,
son Jason and Courtney Roeber all of Idaho City. He is also survived by numerous nieces and
nephews and many great grandchildren.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to his niece and nephew, Joan
and Mel Easton of Eagle. Sam found great
peace at their many Sunday dinners. As
Sam's needs increased in the last few years, Joan and Mel's love and care went
above and beyond. The love you gave
Grandpa was a blessing.
For 95 years, Sam surrounded himself with family and good
friends, way too many to list. Thanks
to his Atlanta family and the outstanding people at the VA Hospital.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that the money be spent taking
someone fishing or a donation made to the Atlanta QRU.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., today (Tuesday), May
13, 2014 at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.
A graveside committal service with military honors will follow at Dry
Creek Cemetery.
