Shirley Faith
Slayton, 91, passed away at 4pm on April 15th after having lunch with a dear
friend. She took one last breath and ventured out to be reunited with her
husband of 54 years, Robert Marvin Slayton, her infant son Robert Donald
Slayton, her sweet boy who became a gentle man, Richard Ronald Slayton, and her
beautiful daughter who lighted up everyone's life, Julie Diane Slayton.
Shirley came
into this world with a splash of drama on December 16, 1927 in Potlatch, Idaho
to Cecilia Wangsness and Franklin Kidder. She met the love of her life and
married Robert Slayton in 1947. Together they planted the roots of a boisterous
family, having six children, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grand children
and one great, great grand child. She is survived by three of her daughters,
Linda Darleen Mencer, Sharlene Renee Woodworth, and Gloria Gayle Finch.
Shirley's great
passion was people. Shirley was a beautiful and poetic writer. She had a rich
inner life which she recorded in her journals and letters. An avid letter
writer, she had numerous pen pals and their friendships spanned decades. Many
of her pen pals became life long friends, writing each other for over 40 years.
Dorothy June Meyers became her pen pal in 1948 and they traded letters for 51
years. She met several of her pen pals in person after writing to them for 30
plus years. Shirley valued friendship above all else and was quick to offer
advice, sympathy and humor. Shirley's precocious sense of humor was one of her
most notable characteristics. Through her friendships and her humor she taught
us all the importance in life.
A viewing will be held on Monday, April 22, from 4-6 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at Dry Creek Cemetery.
