Virginia Elizabeth Sumner passed away on Jan. 20,
2014. She was born on Feb. 17, 1917 to Leonard and Alvina Hall. She grew up in
Barber Town and Boise, ID where she attended Boise High School and graduated
from Links School of Business. She married Martin Sumner Jr. on June 21, 1936,
and they began a lifetime of ministry together. With her husband, they
pioneered Lake City Assembly of God in Seattle, WA while attending Bible
College. They next took Washington Avenue Assembly of God in Yakima, WA
beginning with three people, and it became a thriving church. In 1950 her
husband accepted the pastorate at Calvary Assembly of God in Boise, ID. With
her at his side she was a proficient church organist, pianist and organizer. For
years it was the largest Assembly of God Church in the District. Virginia loved
to organize and put on Easter and Christmas Church Pageants which drew hundreds
of people to the church. Her pageants were the first in the area to introduce
live animals in these productions. People loved her, but more than anything she
loved God. If you were around her one of the first questions she would ask was,
are you a Christian? She was instrumental in consistently leading people to
become believers. She worked extensively in Women's Ministries and was a great
decorator, again assisting her husband as they built the dome church in Boise,
ID now known as the River City Church. When they retired from pastoring, she continued
to socialize with the hundreds of people who had become her friends.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth
Mathews and Helen Riggs; one brother; her husband Rev. Martin Sumner Jr.; and a
grandson, Stevie Sumner. She is survived by her son and his wife, Steve and
Norma Sumner; grandchildren, Dave (Gloria) Sumner, Mike (Nikki) Sumner, and Michelle
(Terry) Letourneau; great grandchildren, Christopher Sumner, Ashlie Letourneau,
Austin Sumner, Josiah Sumner, and Joshua Sumner; a sister, Esther Dearinger;
and a nephew, Lee Riggs.
