Virginia June Matthews Ca
l
l,
97, passed away October 6, 2013, at a local care center. Virginia was born June
6, 1916 in Boise to Jay Ira Matthews and Bessie Maril
l
a
Matthews. She grew up in a house on Manitou Street where her parents owned 3
V2
acres of land which is now Manitou Park.
She graduated from Boise High School and went to Spokane,
Washington where she received training for a career in nursing
.
After
working in a hospital nursery in Spokane for several years she moved to San
Francisco and became a surgical nurse. After returning to Boise she worked as
an obstetrical nurse with a local physician.
While attending church, she met a soldier stationed at Gowen
Field. She and Garald Call married on November 28, 1944 and had almost 64 happy
years together. He passed away July 10, 2008. They enjoyed many visits to the
Oregon coast, attending BSU football and basketball games and traveling
throughout the country to visit family.
Virginia was a lady of many talents. She started decorating
cakes for family members and her hobby became a thriving business. She made
over 1600 birthday cakes and wedding cakes over a 30 year period. One of the
most unique cakes was a cake which resembled a sewing machine in every detail
even size.
She loved music and could play the piano by reading piano music
or just simply repeating a song she had never heard before if someone would
sing it to her just once. We all marveled at her ability.
The talent that we enjoyed the most was her cooking. When
friends and family dropped by they always knew they would be asked to stay for
dinner or offered a sample of a new recipe she had just made. Thanksgiving was
always a holiday we looked forward to because she baked each person's favorite
pie. Depending on how many people came to dinner sometimes there would be 15
pies on the table.
She adored her grandchildren and loved every minute she spent
with them. Their sleepovers included playing Monopoly until midnight and then
being served a huge breakfast in bed the following morning.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jane and Wayne
Keith, grandchildren, Gary and Gaye Keith of Boise, Colby and Motoko Toba-Keith
of Santa Clara, California, Julie and Christopher Downing, Virginia Beach,
Virginia, sister, Hesper Carter of Boise and brother and sister-in-law, Roger
and Peggy Matthews, and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sloan of Colby, Kansas,
Margaret Mead of Greeley, Colorado and Shirley Decker and husband, Shurl Decker
of Greeley, Colorado.
Great grandchildren she adored include David and Matthew Keith,
Athena Toba-Keith, Dakota, Reagan, Lane, Monroe and Daisy Downing and numerous
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Garald, five sisters
and two brothers and her parents.
Virginia was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and
the family would like to thank the congregation for all of their kindnesses to
her over the years
.
The family would like to thank St
.
Luke's
Hospice for all of their care and support
