Walter James Everett, age 82, passed away October 14, due to
complications of a debilitating stroke he suffered in March of this year.
Walt was born October 2, l931 in Longbranch, New Jersey the
only child of Joseph and Mary Landon Everett.
Shortly after his birth the family moved to Asbury Park where Walt spent
his formative years. While still in his teens his thirst for adventure and
quest to see the world brought him to his local Air Force recruiter. He relished the opportunity to experience the
foreign lands and cultures his military career afforded him. In 1949 while
stationed in Germany he met and later married Sonja (Bobaz) with whom he shared
sixty-two wonderful and loving years. They
had one daughter.
In 1970 he was deployed to Viet Nam as a military adviser,
traveling to Singapore, Thailand and other regions in Southeast Asia. After
twenty-seven years he retired from the military remaining in Germany an extra
year to visit the landmarks in Europe.
Upon his return to Boise, he was hired as a mail handler working the
night shift at the Boise Post Office and attending classes at Boise State
during the day.
Walt was a kind, unassuming man, a gifted writer, avid
fisherman, and self-proclaimed “news junkie.” He loved the outdoors, excelled in
basketball as well as track and field. He
loved to collect antiques and had a special passion for antique clocks. His original plan to open his own store soon
fell to the wayside when he realized he couldn’t bear to part with the history
and the fond memories they provided. Walt was a true gentleman, loving husband,
and wonderful father.
He is survived by
his wife Sonja, daughter Leonita Taylor (Eric), brother Alfred Hodges
(Carletta).
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a favorite
charity.
A graveside service will be held at 1PM on Friday, October
18, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise.
