Walter John Stohler died on May 13, 2017 of natural
causes.
Walter was born July 9, 1921 in
Meridian, Idaho to John and Helen Stohler.
He attended Valley View Elementary, Cole Junior High, and graduated from
Boise High School in 1940.
During high
school, he worked for Capital Cleaners in Hyde Park.
When World War Two started, he enlisted in
the Navy (in March 1942).
Walt was sent
to Fleet Torpedo School in San Diego after boot camp.
He served nearly five years as a torpedo man
in the Pacific Theater including the Aleutian Islands and Hawaii.
He was also on shore patrol duty at different
times during those years.
He was
honorably discharged in December 1946.
Walt came back to Boise and worked again at the
Capital Cleaners, and at City Dye Works and the Model Cleaners.
He married Emma Elizabeth Pittard in February
1947.
In 1951, he joined the Boise
Police Department and served for twenty-six years, including patrols, detective
work, etc. and retired as a Sargent.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and his
sisters Marjorie Price and Maryanne Eckberg.
He is survived by his wife Emma, their two children
Walter John Stohler Jr. (Linda) and Julie Stohler (Wayne Chu), three
grandchildren Samantha Roshak (Todd), and Nathan and Jane Chu, and two step-grandchildren
Nick and Andrew Wedel.
He is also
survived by his nephew John Price (Judy) and niece Beverly Burkhartsmeier (Dave),
two great-grandchildren McKinley and Gillian Roshak and cousins in Switzerland.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on May
25 (Thursday), 2017 at Morris Hill Cemetery (Latah St. side), as organized by
Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.
Honors
will be given by the U.S. Navy and Boise Police Department.
The family suggests that memorials be made to
the Boise Police Department.
