Wilbur Oliver

Wilbur Oliver, 87, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011, at his home in Boise.
Wilbur was a lifelong resident of Boise and was born on November 20, 1923, the 6th of 8 children born to Joseph Oliver and Minnie Belle Houde Oliver.

He graduated from Boise High School receiving his diploma in 1941 and was drafted into the US Navy, during WW II, on February 9, 1943. He served the majority of his 2 year 11 month 28 day enlistment at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, working as an aviation mechanic, earning the WWII Victory Medal.

Before the war he owned and operated his own automotive repair shop. After the war he worked for the Bohemian Brewery for many years, Seven-UP Bottling Company for 7 years and then for his brother John at Hardware Sales and Service, as a metal fabricator, until he retired at age 62.

He married Phyllis E. Dorsey on July 12, 1946 and they lived in Boise on Broadway Ave for 33 years before moving to Cree Way.

Wilbur could fix anything, whether it was plumping or electrical, carpentry or automotive. He built the house they lived in on Broadway Ave., remodeling it several times over the years. He also restored a 1938 Chrysler that originally belonged to his Aunt Nellie. He built the family cabin on Cascade Lake and loved spending time there working on the place.

He loved to garden and had bountiful crops of fruit and vegetables that he shared with his family. He also enjoyed camping with his friends and family.
The reoccurring word is family, he loved his family, his daughters and grandsons and great-grand children and the most important time for him was spending time with them.

He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a family reunion in Arkansas some twenty years ago and the family has peace in that knowledge.

Wilbur is survived by his daughters, Clara Jane Eldridge (Thomas) and Kathryn Marie Oliver, both of Boise; grandsons, Kevin Eldridge, wife Lisa, and Michael Eldridge, wife Deanna; four great-grandsons, Austin, Jayden, Colton and Gage and one great-granddaughter, Paige; two sisters, Marvel Castle and Minnie Armstrong (Charles) and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis and five brothers, John C. Oliver, William N. Oliver, Roy R. Oliver, Joseph Frank Oliver and George S. Oliver.

The family would like to thank Margaret, Kristen, Yolanda, and Jenna of Advanced Home Health Care for their love and commitment in caring for Wilbur.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2676 .S. Vista, Boise 83705 or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 223 N. 6th, Boise, ID 83702.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave. Burial will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery.
